Mulch
A layer of material applied to the surface of soil to conserve moisture, improve fertility and health of the soil, reduce weed growth, and enhance the visual appeal of the area.
Mulching is one of the most beneficial practices for a garden.
Organic mulches (like straw, wood chips, bark, or grass clippings) break down over time, adding valuable organic matter and nutrients to the soil. Inorganic mulches (like gravel or plastic sheeting) do not break down but are effective for weed control and heat retention.
Benefits include:
- Moisture Retention: Reduces evaporation.
- Temperature Regulation: Keeps soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
- Weed Suppression: Blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds.
